Working in cartoons, and the big move

Wed Apr 30, 2008, 4:58 AM
Long time, no blog. I'm past apologizing, deal with it!
But, because its been forever long I finally have news, I have a reason for it! I have been working with the fine folks at 70/30 Studios designing cartoons! Pretty awesome, and sorry for not sharing sooner, but I gotta play by the rules! So yea, I'm going to be helping them out and will be moving to the ATL in May, which is pretty exciting. For those of you who are still saying, "Um, that's kinda cool but who is 70/30?" ----Well, I'm glad you asked! 70/30 is a swell animation studio that brought you such great cartoons as Sea Lab 2021
And currently the greatly funny Frisky Dingo;
(who's first season is now on DVD, and is worth every penny, so go pick it up!)

But this is why art has slowed down a tad, and I am still taking on commissions, but they just haven't been posted as regularly. I'm pretty pumped to be apart of the team, during my visit everyone seemed super awesome, so moving day in May can't come soon enough. I'll still keep on top of comics, it's my love, but it will be nice to collaborate on something this big with other artists. Gonna be a great ride!
The trip to Atlanta itself was alright, I live in Maine, and flew out of Boston, but dropped my car off in New Hampshire, so it was a lot of travel. 4hrs to NH, Hour and a half into Boston, then the 2 hour flight into ATL. Pretty exhausting, but well worth it to meet Neal (art director of 70/30 and writer and toner for Giant Killer Turtle) and his super great friends, and co workers. Finding an apartment itself while in Atlanta was kinda exhausting. Saw one real shit hole in particular. In a part of town I wasn't to keen on, we saw a 3 bedroom with piss stained carpet, a wall that had been chewed through by a dog and a bedroom with an old stained chair in the middle of walls covered floor to ceiling in maxim magazine covers.... But, thankfully I was told the paint underneath the Maxim 'wallpaper' could be removed and had fresh paint underneath. Yea, I don't think the rank semen stains could be removed from that floor no matter how hard it was scrubbed. No thanks....
On top of this I had another Land Lady tell me if I asked if the neighborhood was safe she would bitch-slap me. No thanks...
But by monday I had signed a lease and am now the proud renter of what should be a cool apt. And, their is a good chance I'll be able to hit up Dragon-Con! WOOP!

But that is what is new with me, Next blog should happen fairly soon, and have some important news on Giant Killer Turtle, and Rex O'Bannon, that I just can't tell you yet (sorrrrr'ay!) I've also got a slew of LOTR cards and some Marvel Masterpiece cards that I NEED to get commissioned before I move, I posted them, so please make me an offer!!!

For the extreme amount of people who are wondering the same question as me, I thought I'd go ahead and ask for all of our sake... HOW THE CRAP DID YOU PULL THIS ONE OFF??? I mean, COME ON! A job working with one of Adult Swim's best animation studios... WHO'S SEMEN COVERED CARPET DID YOU HAVE TO KISS BEFORE THIS DREAM COME TRUE ACTUALLY... well, CAME TRUE??? I'm excited for ya and WAY TOO JEALOUS to NOT write in caps for the most bit, but seriously, I'm actually researching cartoon occupations and how one might come by a job such as this, but am getting nowhere. Help a fellow artist out?

Don't worry, the mace only burns a little bit... and then you get a nice blush red look in your eyes that everyone can enjoy. ^_^

Caps galore! haha, yea well all i can say is I fell into it by pure luck. About a year ago I was asked to help out a member of the 70/30 team on a side project. He liked my work, we talked and got along well. I asked if he would ever need help to let me know, he threw a little work my way, it was enough to impress him and his boss, and I got asked to come on fulltime. No real magic, just great timing, hard work, and a lot of luck. I guess all i can recommend is being friendly and networking.
I don't know a lot about atlanta, but from what i hear their are a few animation studios in the area that do shows for adult swim, and of course LA.
But thats it, thanks for the congrats, and feel free to drop in and ask any questions. I wish i had more answers for you.

Thanks for the reply. Your work is incredible. Did you attend a university or technical college to extend your skills or did you walk out as a fetus with a pencil in your hand and some ink pens in your mouth. (If you did walk out in such a way, try not to drip on your mom, it could leave a horrible stain in a not so desirable place.) All that aside, I plan to attend Ringling School of Art and Design in Savana after I get my AA at my community college.

ummm no stains thankfully, but I did go to school. I went to Umaine to be an art teacher. I went because I and my parents were kind of afraid of me only having a studio art degree and nothing to fall back on. We live in a pretty rural area of Maine, so I could understand why they worried. But it took me an entire college degree to figure out exactly what I DON'T want to do. Yea, the time spent there helped me, I got better at drawing, learned some cool stuff, and have a degree. But I wanted to be an artist, and settled to be a teacher. My advice, if you know you want to me an artist, go to be an artist, and live in a place that employs artists, and you will be fine. No sense in going to get something you don't want to do.
(side note, I'm not being mean to art teachers, I have all the respect in the world for them, and learned first hand how much of a challenge their job really is. I wish I could do what they do.)

Great advice, man. Thanks so much!
